Introduction

IRISA/SMS is an interface to the mobile carriers’ SMS Center for broadcasting text messages to mobile devices (or PDA)

Key features

IRISA/SMS sub-system is a DRI server (Irisa standard infrastructure) which is an asynchronous message relay.

It ensures queue management for optimised transmission to the SMS Center through multiple X25 circuits. This optimisation allows load balancing and multiplexing : as the IRISA/SMS and the SMS Center dialogue are asynchronous, a second request without waiting for the first response may be sent. Multiplexing facilities are parameterised according to the service specifications of the specific SMS Center.

It offers a buffering service to ensure that there is no loss of data in the event of the halting and restarting of the X25 sub-system.

IRISA/SMS offers the following features :

·          A DRI server

·          A SMS transmission to enabled mobile devices

·          Message queuing

·          A support of 1 to 32 simultaneous virtual circuits with the SMS Center

·          Transactions may be multiplexed

·          A parameterised number of transmission retries

·          A programmable or manual start and shutdown

·          An user-level access authentication

·          Detailed statistics

·          Test service facilities

·          A compatibility with ETS GSM 03.40 and Sema SMS 2000 protocols

Benefits

IRISA/SMS makes it possible to send or to receive a text message (160 alphanumeric character) from any SMS enabled mobile device. The SMS standard is a store and forward protocol, the messages being relayed by a so-called SMS Center connected to the carrier’s network.

Distinctive characteristics

·          Allows an easy integration of the SMS media into any application

·          Provides a common interface for the various SMS Centers protocols supported

Implementation examples

·          Mail notification

·          Delivery tracking

·          Local information messages

·          Etc.
